Regarding “Has He Stepped Out of the Shadow?” by Lawrence Christon (May 23):
Christon expressed beautifully how Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” has failed to live up to its potential. Leno was a powerful guest host, in small quantities, but on a regular basis, his embarrassing lack of brainpower shines through. He’s comfortable only when talking cars to guests, which seems to befuddle them, and his comedy bits are amateurish, at best.
Most significant, however, as Christon pointed out, Leno’s stock-in-trade monologues have become carbon copies. Jokes are repeated frequently, sometimes without word changes.
In general, Leno’s “Tonight” offers little worth watching, so until Chevy Chase hits the air, I’ll be viewing “Nightline.”
