3 From CSUN Picked for Olympic Festival

Ken Lynch, Matt Unger and Craig Hewitt, all starters on a Cal State Northridge volleyball team that finished second in the nation, were among 44 players selected to compete at the U.S. Olympic Festival, July 23-Aug. 1 in San Antonio, Tex.
Lynch, an outside hitter, was placed on the West team, which Northridge assistant Jeff Campbell will help coach. Unger, a setter, is on the East team and Hewitt, a middle blocker, is on the South squad.
The North team, which will be coached by John Price, Northridge’s head coach, includes Kevin Hambly, a former Royal High star who plays for Brigham Young.
Jon Baer and Gene Urcan of Northridge were among 13 players selected as alternates.
Racquetball
Tony Jelso from Ventura qualified for the 1993 Olympic Festival by reaching the open quarterfinal round of the national singles tournament in Houston last weekend. He was defeated by eventual champion John Ellis.
Karate
Paris Blumenthal, 34, of Studio City has qualified for the AAU/USA Karate National Championships for the third consecutive year. The tournament will be held in Cincinnati July 3-4. A fourth-degree black belt, Blumenthal qualified in the men’s Kumite (point fighting) Belt Division. Blumenthal is ranked No. 1 as a heavyweight in the Southern Pacific Area and fourth nationally.
Baseball
Former area high school standouts Casey Burrill and Ryan McGuire were named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. All-American squad that was announced Friday.
Burrill, a former Hart High standout, is a USC catcher; McGuire, an El Camino Real High graduate, is UCLA’s first baseman.
Cal State Sacramento pitcher Roland De La Maza, formerly of St. Genevieve High and College of the Canyons, was named to the second team.
Justin McKitterick of Woodland Hills has been selected to the California Rookies, a team of 14-15-year-old players from California who will play a series in Beijing, China, Aug. 8-17.
