Gina Heads

School: Newport Harbor

Sport: Track and field

Position: Shotput/discus

Class: Junior

At 5 feet 3, Heads is an unlikely discus and shotput standout, but what she lacks in stature, she makes up in strength and quickness. Heads, who won a national under-17 weightlifting title this year, finished second in the discus with a mark of 138 feet 7 inches and won the shotput in 41-11 at the Southern Section Division II track and field championships Saturday. Newport Harbor won the team title with 43 points--all coming from the field events--and Heads accounted for 18 of them. Last year she advanced to the State meet in both the shot and discus. Her marks Saturday were not personal bests, but Newport Harbor assistant coach Tony Ciarelli said Heads hasn’t peaked. “She had a really good week of practice so we were hoping for a little better mark in the shot,” assistant Tony Ciarelli said. “Hopefully, that will come next week.” The Masters’ meet is Friday at Cerritos College.

Other top performers:

* Esperanza’s Carrie Caulkins won the 1,600 meters in 4:59.35 in the Division I track and field championships. She finished third in the 3,200 in 11:04.49, helping the Aztecs to second place in the team competition.

* Los Alamitos’ Cavetra Mitchell won three Division II events--the 100 meters in 11.91, the 200 in 24.29 and the 100 high hurdles in 14.70. All her times were wind-aided, but her 200 time was the fastest ever run by an Orange County girl.
