Magnet Schools Seeking Students

The Los Angeles Unified School District is accepting applications for its two new magnet schools, including a math and science program at Granada Hills High School that will cater to deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
The Granada Hills magnet center and a new math and science program at Revere Middle School on the Westside will begin this fall. The Granada Hills program will initially serve ninth- and 10th-graders and has about 180 openings. Officials hope that half of the openings will be filled by hearing-impaired youths.
Teachers at the Granada Hills magnet will work closely with officials at Cal State Northridge, which boasts a nationally recognized center on deaf studies.
The Board of Education approved the magnet--the first of its kind in the city--after the district received a grant from the federal government as a result of military downsizing. About $1.6 million has been set aside for math and engineering magnet programs.
Parents and students interested in either the Granada Hills or Revere magnets can pick up applications at their schools. Those who applied earlier for the district’s 105 other magnets must reapply for the two new programs. The deadline is Friday.
