Dick Dale, who invented the surf-rock sound in Orange County dance halls during the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, recently joined blues great John Lee Hooker and rapper Ice-T in accepting a lifetime achievement award voted by an undergraduate committee at UC Berkeley. The newly instituted Lifetime Achievement Award for Contributions to Popular Culture is intended for “American artists whose career has had a significant impact in shaping American culture,” according to Michael Kay, chairman of the 40-student committee that selected the three recipients. Mick Fleetwood also was honored with a Humanitarian Award in a luncheon ceremony last week at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley.
