The City Council has delayed action on a proposal to merge the Recreation and Parks Department with the Arts Division.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the council referred the proposal to the Arts Commission for further study and asked for a report in late July or early August. Under the proposal, the newly merged department would be called the Recreation, Parks and Cultural Resources Department.
About half a dozen people spoke against the proposal, saying that arts deserved its own staff.
Also on the table is a proposal to eliminate $130,000 in arts grants to local artists.
