LAFAYETTE PARK : Political Statements--From a Spray Can

“Word From the Underground,” an exhibition of graffiti art, ends its monthlong showing Saturday.
Organized by Stash Maleski to benefit the Coalition Against Police Abuse, the exhibit features 20 large works by graffiti artists, ages 15 to 25, done with spray-paint on canvases.
The murals offer a street-level vision of Los Angeles, replete with confrontational episodes between youths and police, cartoon figures and political commentary in graffiti-style lettering.
“The goal of the exhibition is to take graffiti art in a political direction,” Maleski said. “We wanted to give kids the opportunity to express themselves and say something without getting arrested.”
The exhibit will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Tuesday through Saturday at 539 S. Rampart Blvd. The entrance and parking lot are on South Benton Way, a block west of Rampart Boulevard.
