SOFTBALL : Hyder Leads South Gate Over Lincoln

Jennifer Hyder threw a four-hitter to lead South Gate to a 2-1 win over Lincoln in a City Section 3-A Division playoff game Thursday at South Gate Park.
Hyder struck out five batters and did not give up an earned run until the seventh inning.
Records: South Gate 14-0, Lincoln 11-3.
THURSDAY GAMES
Verdugo Hills 1, Roosevelt 0--Pitcher Rachel Maldonado threw a two-hitter and Verdugo Hills scored its only run on a fielding error in the fourth inning to win a City 3-A quarterfinal game at Roosevelt.
Roosevelt came close to scoring in the bottom of the fifth when Estela Zuniga doubled then stole third. After fouling seven consecutive pitches, Marcia Paz struck out. Zuniga had the only two hits for the Roughriders.
Records: Verdugo Hills 9-4; Roosevelt 17-5
Westchester 3, Garfield 0--Pitcher Lisa Ikeda tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven as the Comets won a City 3-A playoff first-round game at home.
Losing pitcher Alma Limon threw a four-hitter, striking out five.
Records: Garfield 9-5; Westchester 14-3.
TUESDAY GAME
South Gate 11, Los Angeles 0--Hyder pitched a three-hit shutout, and South Gate scored in each of the first five innings in a City 3-A first round game at South Gate Park.
Hyder, who struck out four and walked one, surrendered a hit to Los Angeles’ first batter, Michelle Hyton, then retired the next consecutive 11. Los Angeles didn’t get a runner past second base the entire game.
The Rams got two hits each from Norma Gonzales, Michelle Arizaga and Maria Ledesma. The Romans’ other hits belonged to Maria Alas and Mary Cardenas.
Records: South Gate 17-3; Los Angeles 11-7
