SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS : Bernal’s 4-Hitter Lifts Newbury Park

Carolina Bernal (11-3) fired a four-hitter and struck out four to lead Newbury Park High to a 5-0 victory over Buena on Friday in a first-round Southern Section Division I playoff game at Buena.
Bernal, a junior right-hander, struck out four for Newbury Park (20-7), the third-place representative from the Marmonte League. Mandy Kiningham had three hits and Shelly Morris and Karen Zappia each added two hits for the Panthers.
In other Division I first-round games:
Camarillo 3, Downey 0--Laura Richardson tossed a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead the Scorpions (21-6) past Downey (13-7) at Camarillo.
Camarillo, the second-place team from the Marmonte League, scored the only run it would need in the first inning on a bases-loaded walk. The Scorpions, who had four hits, added two runs in the fifth. Johnna Mike had a run-scoring double and later scored.
Righetti 1, Thousand Oaks 0--The Warriors (12-14) scored in the first inning on squeeze bunt at Righetti. Thousand Oaks (13-13-1) managed just three hits off Righetti’s Necie Ahumada. Jessica Davenport (4-2) tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Lancers.
DIVISION II
Canyon 6, Victor Valley 2--Crystl Bustos hit a three-run homer at Canyon. Bustos, a sophomore, also scored three runs and stole home twice. Marianne Winchester (14-6) pitched a three-hitter for Canyon (20-6).
Mayfair 3, Hart 0--Jennie Nordhagen had two hits for the Indians (15-11), who managed only six hits at Hart.
DIVISION III
Alemany 8, California 1--Alba Cano went three for four with five RBIs at Alemany. Cano’s three-run home run in the fourth inning gave Alemany (21-7) a 6-0 lead. Jamie Moore went two for three.
Quartz Hill 3, Covina 2--Kristin Jump doubled in the sixth to drive in Nicci Manduca and Brandi Macias with the tying and winning runs at Quartz Hill. The Rebels (19-5) have won five in a row.
DIVISION IV
Bell-Jeff 3, La Puente 2--Carrie Breedlove tossed a four-hitter and struck out seven for the Guards at Bell-Jeff (14-3). The Guards scored all of their runs in the fourth, two on Maia Casagrande’s triple and one on a single by Christi Planas.
DIVISION V
Fillmore 23, St. Matthias 0--Jamie Arundell struck out 10 and pitched a two-hitter over six innings at Fillmore (19-3). Arundell also doubled and tripled, driving in two runs and scoring four. Tina Alverdi had three hits.
La Reina 13, Kern Valley 0--Sophomore Shane Anderson went four for four with two runs and two RBIs and hit a solo homer to lead off the third inning for the top-seeded Regents (23-4-1).
Freshman Jennifer Baltruzak (14-0-1) scattered three singles, struck out seven and walked none.
L.A. Baptist 11, Calabasas 8--Stephanie Majors was two for three with a homer and two RBIs at L.A. Baptist (11-10).
Christine Johnson added two hits and three stolen bases.
Moorpark 12, Brentwood 2--The Musketeers (18-6) scored five runs and batted around in the first and fourth innings to defeat Brentwood (9-11) at Moorpark.
Karen Richter blasted a two-run home run and Tina Milburn had a two-run double.
Paraclete 8, Carpinteria 0--Noelle Larsen, a senior right-hander, came within a fourth-inning walk of a perfect game at Jane Reynolds Park in Lancaster.
Ashley Gayer, Ariana Bates and Christy Wood each had two hits for Paraclete (20-4).
DIVISION VI
L.A. Lutheran 10, Providence 8--Carrie Schaumann had four hits and Holly Roepke homered at L.A. Lutheran.
Oakwood 21, LeLycee 3--Laura Vatz was three for four and drove in four runs at Oakwood.
