John Wordin of West Hills moved up to 13th place and Shawn Cronkhite of Chatsworth climbed to 16th Friday after the second of four legs of the Mike Nields Memorial Stage Race in Fort Collins, Colo.
Wordin and Cronkhite, who ride for the Miller Lite Cycling team, both finished in the lead pack Friday in the 82-mile road race. Today the pair rides in a one-hour criterium.
Baseball
Slugger Andy Shaw of College of the Canyons has been selected Western State Conference player of the year after winning the WSC triple crown.
Shaw batted .500 with 12 home runs and 48 runs batted in to lead Canyons to the WSC title. He is the fourth Canyons player to receive the honor in the past 10 seasons.
Other Canyons players selected to the all-conference first team are third baseman Ted Kiester, outfielder Kirk Fellows, pitcher R.J. Simone and designated hitter-pitcher Keith Halcovich, who was picked as the utility player.
Also chosen to the first team were Glendale catcher Lance Evans and first baseman Mickey Moreno; Pierce first baseman Jason Cohen, third baseman Louis Tapia, outfielder Josh Smaler and pitcher Danny Rodriguez; Valley first baseman David Stevenson, outfielder Ozzie Areu and pitcher Willie Rivera.
Others included Ventura first baseman Ryan McMullen and second baseman Mike Muncy; Oxnard outfielder Nick Frank, and Moorpark outfielder Darryl Hernandez and pitcher Lee Speshyock.
Canyons’ Len Mohney, who guided the Cougars to the conference championship, was named coach of the year.
Swimming
Pierce College swimmer Bettina Auberman has been named a junior college All-American after posting top-16 times in three events.
Auberman, a freshman from Switzerland, ranked seventh this season in the 200-yard freestyle event (1:56.76) and eighth in both the 100 freestyle (54.11) and 500 freestyle (5:16.24).
Miscellany
The Conejo Recreation and Park District is taking signups for summer adult basketball and mixed volleyball leagues.
Deadline for advance registration is May 25 for basketball and May 28 for mixed volleyball.
