Buyukuncu, who swam for his native country, Turkey, in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, dominated the Southern Section Division I championships Friday. He set a national high school record in the 100-yard backstroke, winning in 47.84 seconds to break the mark of Derek Weatherford of Ft. Myers, Fla., by more than a second. Buyukuncu had set a Southern Section record (49.51) in the preliminaries Thursday, before surpassing that and the national record Friday. Said Woodbridge Coach Dan Gaines: “I knew he could do it, but I didn’t know he would do it by this much.” Buyukuncu also won the 200 individual medley in 1:49.78, narrowly missing the Southern Section record of 1:49.13 set by Mission Viejo’s Marcin Malinski last year.
Other top performers:
* Gary Folsom drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the seventh to give Orange a 7-6 victory over Santa Ana Valley and a share of the Century League title. Folsom also hit a home run in the game.
* Orange’s Jaime Martinez had the fastest qualifying times in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Southern Section Division II preliminaries. He finished the 1,600 in 4 minutes 17.15 seconds, the fastest time in the county this season, and the 3,200 in 9:23.09.
* Mitch McCoy had 31 kills in Newport Harbor’s four-game victory over Edison in the first round of the Division I volleyball playoffs.
* Tommy Reimers pitched a one-hitter in Century’s 4-2 victory over Laguna Hills, stopping the Hawks’ 12-game Pacific Coast League winning streak.
