HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Royal Ends Simi Valley’s Perfect League Season

Royal High ruined rival Simi Valley’s bid for an undefeated Marmonte League season Friday with a 5-1 victory at Simi Valley in the regular-season finale.

Junior right-hander David Vicari (5-1) limited the Pioneers (23-3, 13-1 in league play) to a fourth-inning solo home run by Ryan Hankins, his 12th this season and fourth in the past two games.

Senior right-hander Keith Loitz relieved in the fifth, striking out seven in the final three innings.

Royal (15-9, 10-4), which finished third behind Newbury Park, scored three runs in the third. David Brown stroked a two-run single and Jack Kocur added a run-scoring double.

In other baseball games:

Oxnard 6, San Marcos 4--The Yellowjackets scored all their runs in the second inning to defeat the visiting Royals in a Channel League finale. San Marcos (16-5-1, 10-4) finished in a first-place tie with Dos Pueblos (18-6, 10-4), a 7-6 winner over Santa Barbara.

Starter Dan Lagreca (8-1) took the loss for San Marcos.

Hueneme 8, Ventura 3--Ricardo Garcia (6-3) allowed two hits and two runs in six innings, striking out seven for host Hueneme (13-11, 9-5), which finished third in the Channel League. Juan Ponce had two hits and two runs batted in for Hueneme.

Thousand Oaks 3, Channel Islands 2--Jamal Nichols was three for three with three stolen bases for the Lancers (17-9, 8-6) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Channel Islands finished the season 11-13, 6-8.

Santa Paula 6, Calabasas 2--Brian Whittaker went two for three with a run batted in to lead the Cardinals to a Frontier League win over the visiting Coyotes.

Starter Raul Santa Rosa (3-2) pitched a five-hitter for Santa Paula (12-10, 7-5), which finished fourth in the league. League champion Calabasas finished the regular season 14-5-1, 8-4.

Loyola 8, Notre Dame 3--Wes Rachels was two for four with three RBIs to lead the Cubs to a Mission League upset against the Knights, ranked sixth in The Times area poll, at Loyola. Notre Dame (19-5, 11-3) finished second in the league, ahead of third-place Loyola (11-11, 9-5).

Palmdale 6, Littlerock 1--Chris Paxton had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in four runs for visiting Palmdale in a Golden League game. David Glick (2-1) went the distance for Palmdale (18-6-1, 10-4-1), allowing four hits while striking out seven.

Highland 11, Antelope Valley 4--Catcher Jeff Tepper was three for four with three runs, three RBIs and a home run, leading the Bulldogs to a Golden League victory at home and the third playoff spot in the league.

Glendale 11, Muir 4--Glendale (11-10, 7-8 in the Pacific League) needed a victory to qualify for the playoffs. Tied, 4-4, in the top of the seventh, Glendale scored seven runs to win. Loren Geller led a seven-hit attack with two hits and two RBIs.

Moorpark 6, Nordhoff 1--The Musketeers finished as Frontier League co-champions with Calabasas, but the Coyotes will go into the playoffs seeded No. 1 because they beat Moorpark (14-8, 8-4) two out of three. Jay Gibbons was two for three and scored twice for the Musketeers.

SOFTBALL

Canyon 6, Hart 5--Charrise Lightfoot’s two-run single with one out in the eighth proved to be the difference in the Foothill League game at Newhall Park.

The win clinched the league title for Canyon (19-6, 10-2), which overcame seven errors with a 12-hit attack. Freshman Tammy Hughes was three for three with two RBIs for the Cowboys.

Hart finished second with an 8-4 record.

Moorpark 3, Nordhoff 1--Christina Fernandez and Mindy Penrod combined on a no-hitter for host Moorpark (17-6, 10-2), which finished as co-champion of the Frontier League with Santa Paula. Karen Richter knocked in two of Moorpark’s runs with a double.
