Botero Fake: A painting of a dancing man and woman that appeared on the cover of a Christie’s catalogue has since been determined to be a fake. The painting had been attributed to Latin American artist Fernando Botero and was expected to sell for $400,000 to $500,000 at auction. The forgery came to light while the painting was touring Mexico last month. Botero, who lives in New York, asked that the forgery of “The Dancers” be destroyed and the owner agreed. “I was surprised that this painting was accepted by people who are supposed to be experts in Latin American art because it is a copy done in a very vulgar way,” said Botero, a Colombian native.
