A Caltrans worker wearing a black arm band in honor of 52 fellow highway employees killed on the job was killed Wednesday when an 18-wheeler crashed into a weed-spraying truck on the Pomona Freeway.
The fatally injured worker, a 47-year-old whose name was withheld, “came in this morning to have someone tie his black armband on before he went into the field,” said Caltrans spokeswoman Margie Tiritilli.
Ten other people were injured in the 10:45 a.m. crash in the eastbound freeway lanes at Lemon Avenue, said California Highway Patrol Officer Donna Urquidi. The killed worker was driving a Caltrans truck carrying the herbicide diquat dibromide, she said.
