HOLLYWOOD : Woman Shot by Police Wins $597,000 in Lawsuit

A former Hollywood resident shot eight times by Los Angeles police officers after she threatened them with a knife has been awarded $597,000 in damages by a Los Angeles Superior Court jury.
Catherine Hernandez, 36, had been ordered to leave a Hollywood street in 1989 because an officer believed that she was drunk. Police said three officers shot her after she drew a knife, pulled out Taser gun darts fired into her body and then jumped on the hood of a car.
The jury found that the officers violated Hernandez’s constitutional rights and that the city was liable for a police determination that the shooting was within policy, said Hugh Manes, Hernandez’s attorney. She now lives in Texas.
