The Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team, which broke a 13-game losing streak last Tuesday with a victory over Cal State Los Angeles, anticipated its one-game winning streak would probably end Sunday against 18th-ranked USC.
The Matadors were right.
The visiting Trojans (17-5) cruised to a 78-36 win over Northridge after opening a 17-2 advantage in the first nine minutes.
“They’re as tough as we thought,” Matador guard Michelle Esparza said. “We just wanted to keep them under a certain level.”
Northridge (5-18) kept USC All-American Lisa Leslie in check in the first half, holding the 6-foot-5 center to eight points, but Leslie wore down CSUN’s defense in the second half and finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
Esparza scored the Matadors’ first 14 points of the second half and finished with a team-high 17. Alana Collins had six points and 11 rebounds.
