ROUNDUP : Surging Cigar Toss Wins the Appleton Handicap

Cigar Toss surged through on the rail and beat Bidding Proud by two lengths to win the $100,000 Appleton Handicap on a soggy track at Gulfstream Race Course in Hallandale, Fla., on Saturday.
Cigar Toss ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43 2/5 and paid $27.80, $8.60 and $4.80. Bidding Proud paid $5.20 and $4, and Archies Laughter returned $6.60. Peanut Butter Onit, the even-money favorite, finished last.
Bred in Argentina, Cigar Toss is a 6-year-old son of Egg Toss, owned by South Barge Farm. He won five races and $91,432 last year in 22 starts.
Aztec Hill scored her first stakes victory in the $60,000-added Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct in New York.
Ensign Joanne finished second, four lengths behind, but was disqualified and placed third after impeding True Affair in mid-stretch. True Affair was placed second.
Aztec Hill covered 1 mile 70 yards in 1:42 2/5 over a fast track, earning $40,680 for Loblolly Stable. She paid $5, $2.60 and $2.10.
