The Region : Drunk-Driving Crackdown
The California Highway Patrol and six San Gabriel Valley police agencies are teaming up to crack down on drunk drivers this year.
Teams consisting of officers from the CHP and the Azusa, Baldwin Park, Covina, West Covina, Glendora and Irwindale police departments will be deployed on 48 nights from Feb. 5 to Jan. 30, 1994, CHP Patrol Sgt. Dave Eckenrode said.
Each team will consist of 16 officers, two each from the six police agencies and four from the CHP. They will be under CHP supervision.
The program will be underwritten by a $286,211 federal grant, Eckenrode said.
Eckenrode said that while the valley’s population increased by 7% from 1986 to 1991, traffic collisions in which driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol was a primary factor increased by more than 20%.
