Ed Stokes had 18 points and 12 rebounds and No. 12 Arizona defeated Washington, 93-76, Thursday night at Tucson.
Arizona (8-2, 3-0 in Pacific-10) used its pressure defense to key a 12-2 run midway through the second half to break open a three-point game.
Reserve Joe McLean keyed Arizona’s burst with a three-pointer and he finished with 14 points. He grabbed an offensive rebound and made a jump shot with one second to play to give the Wildcats a 50-40 lead at halftime.
Richard Manning, Washington’s top scorer and the league’s leading rebounder, played for the first time since missing two games because of a knee injury. He scored eight points and had 10 rebounds.
With the game tied, 26-26, Stokes started a 14-3 spree with a layup. He made two foul shots a half-minute later as Arizona took a lead that it never gave up.
Damon Stoudamire scored 15 for Arizona, Khalid Reeves had 13 and Chris Mills 12. Bryant Boston scored 19 points for the Huskies (7-4, 1-1).
Arizona State 81, Washington State 77--Marcell Capers made a field goal and two free throws as the Sun Devils came from seven points behind in the final 3 1/2 minutes at Tempe.
It was the first Pac-10 victory for the Sun Devils (7-3), who lost to USC and UCLA last weekend.
Freshman Mark Hendrickson scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half for Washington State (6-5, 0-2), but he also threw the ball through teammate Fred Ferguson’s hands with 1:54 left.
Dwayne Fontana led Arizona State with 18 points. Capers scored 16, including 12 after halftime, and Lester Neal added 15.
