No Obligation

In Film Clips (Nov. 22) writer Jane Galbraith referred to an anticipated Oscar campaign by Warner Bros. on behalf of Michelle Pfeiffer, stating that “studios are contractually obligated to launch academy campaigns for stars of Pfeiffer’s caliber.”
To my knowledge, there has never been a contractual obligation on the part of Warner Bros. to campaign for an Academy Award on behalf of a star or filmmaker.
We feel that Michelle’s work in “Batman Returns” is exceptionally creative and entertaining, and this studio’s attempt to bring her efforts to the attention of academy members reflects our high regard for her inspired performance, and not a contractual obligation.
