THE ART OF PEACE by Morihei Ueshiba, compiled and translated by John Stevens (Shambhala: $6; 126 pp., paperback original). The founder of the martial art known as aikido, Morihei Ueshiba formulated his philosophical teachings to counter the aggressive stance of Musashi’s “The Book of Five Rings” and Sun-Tzu’s “The Art of War.” This anthology of his thought emphasizes nonviolence and enlightenment: “The Way of a Warrior is based on humanity, love and sincerity; the heart of martial valor is true bravery, wisdom, love and friendship.” “Peace” introduces a new series of “pocket classics” from Shambhala: These small (3x4-inch), easy-to-carry volumes include “Cold Mountain” by Han-shan and Rilke’s “Duino Elegies.”
