HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Granite Hills Knocks Off Coronado

Coronado’s reign in San Diego water polo ended Friday night in the section semifinals at El Cajon Valley High School. Ironically, the five-time defending 3-A champion Islanders were beaten by a team that has never reached the finals, Granite Hills, 18-13.
Matt Robbins and Darryl Auston scored five goals apiece to stretch to 18 the winning streak of Granite Hills (26-2).
“Coronado is the team of the decade, and you set your standard against them,” Granite Hills Coach Brian Wilbur said afterward. “We talked all week about breaking their streak.”
Coronado (20-10) got five goals from Greg Finley and four from Dan Luckinbill.
“To use soccer terms, we did everything but finish,” Coronado Coach Randy Burgess said. “But you’ve got give credit to their goalie.”
David Moore blocked nine shots.
Poway 11, Monte Vista 8--Poway (27-4) got 13 saves from Andy Watt and four goals from Greg Mendenhall. Joel Hundley scored five goals for Monte Vista (21-4).
2-A Semifinals
Bishop’s 12, Valhalla 10--John Haller scored five goals and Oakley Brooks had 15 saves to lead The Bishop’s School (21-4). Dan Branch and John Meyer scored three each for Valhalla (17-12).
USDHS 7, La Jolla 5--Mike O’Beirne scored three goals and Darryl Hild had 12 saves to lead No. 2 USDHS (16-10) over No. 3 La Jolla (14-8).
FIELD HOCKEY
Third-seeded Torrey Pines upset No. 2 Bishop’s, 1-0, to advance to Saturday’s championship match. Kris Glynn scored Torrey Pines’ only goal and Nicole Mione earned the shutout.
Top-seeded Serra scored a 2-0 victory over Hilltop.
