Opera News: Italian composer Giancarlo Menotti has been appointed artistic director of the Rome Opera. . . . Closer to home, Los Angles Music Center Opera professionals are working with students at Manual Arts and Fremont high schools in South-Central Los Angeles to help them create their own operas about last spring’s riots. The two resulting works will be performed at both schools on Dec. 7-8.
