IRVINE — Pete Sampras, a finalist at the U.S. Open last month, defeated Michael Chang, 6-4, 6-2, in the first Disneyland Tennis Challenge exhibition in front of 4,500 Thursday night at UC Irvine’s Bren Center.
Sampras, ranked No. 3 in the world, used an overpowering serve to take control early in the first set. He broke Chang’s serve in the third game to go ahead, 2-1, and went on to win, 6-4.
From a 2-2 tie in the second set, Sampras broke Chang to seize the momentum for good. He won the final four games to close out the match.
