A “bed tax” that could add as much as $50,000 a year to the city coffers has been approved in concept by the City Council.
The council voted 4 to 0 Tuesday to ask City Atty. Carol Lynch to draft an ordinance imposing an 8% tax on room rates for guests staying in the city, which has five hostelries.
The measure, which will have its first reading Oct. 13, does not require a public hearing and can be enacted by a majority vote of the council. Councilman Edward L. Chavez was absent Tuesday.
