HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : San Diego Mixes Wing-T and Play Action to Come Up With a Victory
- Share via
San Diego High’s football team expected to be prepared for its game against University of San Diego High at Balboa Stadium Friday, especially since it practices against the USDHS offense daily. One thing the Cavers didn’t expect: a play-action pass.
The host Cavers (1-1) and the Dons (1-1) each run the Delaware Wing-T offense. Their defenses are used to plugging holes in the line of scrimmage to stop the running game, which uses a variety of reverses and misdirection schemes to keep opponents off balance.
But twice while the Cavers jammed the line on a fake handoff, Dons quarterback Mike Sexton passed. And twice wide receiver Glenn Sawyer had sprinted past the San Diego secondary.
Sawyer, running identical fly patters, snared spirals of 16 and 26 yards en route to a 21-0 nonleague victory by USDHS. Both Sexton-to-Sawyer scoring plays came in the second quarter and gave the Dons a 14-0 lead at halftime. They scored again in the fourth quarter, with running back Scott Pharis capping a long drive with a 3-yard run.
USDHS threw a balanced attack at San Diego, including 193 net yards rushing on 32 attempts. Brady Walker, who broke loose for 43 yards on his first carry to set up the first touchdown, finished with 69 yards on 12 carries. Sexton, who had 54 yards rushing on six carries, also completed five of eight passes for 88 yards.
The Dons sacked Caver quarterbacks Rodney Jones and Westley Pierre three times and held them to one completion for seven yards. USDHS, however, was also penalized eight times for 108 yards.
