GLENDALE : Moorhead in Spotlight for Low Profile
- Share via
Rep. Carlos J. Moorhead (R-Glendale) has been named dean of the “obscure caucus” in the House of Representatives by Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper. The 10-term incumbent was one of 10 lawmakers cited as “masters of ducking the limelight.”
The newspaper noted that Moorhead was a staunch defender of President Richard M. Nixon as a member of the House Judiciary Committee during the 1974 impeachment hearings.
“Fame was not his reward for loyalty,” Roll Call said, “and he has been a behind-the-scenes player ever since.”
Moorhead’s low-profile status may be jeopardized next session if he is reelected. He is slated to become the ranking Republican member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee--a potentially powerful position that could push him out front more often.
Maintaining a low profile in the context of the Roll Call list is not necessarily such a bad thing. Half the members listed last year gained undesired fame through scandal or high-profile reelection battles. Moorhead, meanwhile, had no check overdrafts, scandal or campaign battle.
