ANAHEIM — Kennedy High School running back Ray Mobley scored twice and set up the third touchdown as the Fighting Irish defeated Cypress, 21-7, at Handel Stadium.
Mobley, a senior, scored on a one-yard run with 9 minutes 2 seconds to play in the first half to give Kennedy a 14-7 lead.
His 70-yard kickoff return set up the Irish’s first score, a five-yard run by Charlie Marino with 1:37 to play in the first quarter.
Cypress (0-1) opened the scoring on Mike Brito’s two-yard run with 2:25 left in the opening quarter. Joey Meza intercepted Kennedy quarterback John Guthrie and returned it to the Irish 7-yard line to set up the score.
Mobley, who finished with 88 yards in 15 carries, scored the final touchdown with 9:37 left in the third quarter when he broke loose up the middle for a 47-yard touchdown run.
Kennedy (1-0) nearly shut down the Cypress attack with its defense, limiting the Centurions to just 38 yards in the second half. The Irish sacked Cypress quarterback David Martin seven times and had four tackles for losses.
Brito, who started the game at tailback, led the Centurions with 48 yards on 13 carries, all in the first half. However, the senior did not play in the second half.
