IBM Will Link Minicomputers to Macintosh: International Business Machines will announce today a way to link its popular minicomputer line with Apple Computer Inc.’s Macintosh, a development stemming from the alliance between the computer makers, industry executives say. Tying the Macintosh PC to IBM’s AS-400 minicomputers may be the most significant development so far from the cooperation agreement announced by the two companies last year. The linkage will be provided by a product Apple designed. The development also is significant because the AS-400 line--one of IBM’s most profitable and successful--was designed as a proprietary technology, meaning it would not easily work with other brands.
