Paul Lewis Clemens, 80, an artist best known for his portraits of film stars. He spent most of his lengthy career in the Los Angeles area after moving from the Midwest, where he attended the Chicago Art Institute. He began painting for the Depression-era Works Progress Administration and won several awards for figure painting, which he taught at L.A.’s Otis Art Institute in the early 1940s. His work has been exhibited at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, Pa., the National Academy of Design and the Metropolitan Museum, both in New York City. His portrait subjects include Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Audrey Hepburn, William Holden, Frank Sinatra, Henry Fonda, Eleanor Parker (a former wife), Ronald Colman, Angela Lansbury and many more. In Sherman Oaks on Aug. 20 of congestive heart failure.
