Buchanan’s Speech
As a Republican, I have never been so alarmed at a television production as I have this week watching the Houston convention. This miracle of communication suddenly brought home to me the fact that right-wing religious zealots and self-righteous bigots are running havoc over the party.
First, they develop a platform to ensure that President Bush will not be reelected. Then they cheer as Patrick Buchanan preaches hatred and division, chastising the media for doing no more than allowing them to expose his followers as fascists in Christian drag.
Since the party embraces these so-called Christians under the guise of political pragmatism, then it might as well call upon the KKK to get out the vote. If Bush were smart he would denounce the platform and throw these hatemongers out. It could cost him the election, but in the long run and for the sake of Republican idealism, it would be the best thing for America. Lincoln must be spinning in his grave.
