Image Entertainment Loses $1.67 Million

Image Entertainment Inc., a Chatsworth supplier of laser discs, reported a large loss in its fiscal first quarter, which it blamed on weak film releases, the sluggish economy and higher interest and operating costs.

Image lost $1.67 million in the three months ended June 30, compared with a year-earlier loss of $482,639. Sales totaled $9.8 million, up slightly from $9.7 million.

The company said its operating costs grew mostly because of a large increase in its percentage of sales from less-profitable products, and from expanded marketing and advertising activities.
