Fullerton College Names Coaches as Athletic Directors

TIMES STAFF WRITER

The shuffling of Fullerton College’s athletic department staff was completed Friday when Jim Kiefer was named men’s athletic director and Colleen Riley was picked as women’s athletic director, it was announced.

Kiefer has been the Hornets’ cross-country and track and field coach for 13 years. Riley has coached the school’s women’s basketball team for 23 seasons.

The moves are the final steps in replacing Hal Sherbeck, who was the school’s football coach, men’s athletic director and the division dean of physical education for the last 31 years.

Sherbeck announced his retirement in March and moved to Montana in July. Marv Sampson and Glenn Thomas will be co-coaches for the football team this fall. Sue Beers, who was the women’s athletic director, became division dean. Kiefer and Riley will continue to coach.

Kiefer also has worked at San Diego State, UCLA, El Camino College and Downey High School. He coached Fullerton to the South Coast Conference track and field title in 1983.

“My career goal was to be in a situation where I could give a great contribution to an athletic program as great as Fullerton has,” Kiefer said. “To be able to follow in the footsteps of a man as legendary as Hal Sherbeck just adds to my happiness. I just hope I don’t trip in those footsteps.”

Riley is the winningest women’s community college basketball coach in the history of the state with a 525-125 record. Her Hornet teams have won 15 conference titles, six Southern California titles and a state title in 1978.

Riley also attended Fullerton College, where she was a volleyball, field hockey, basketball and softball standout.

“I’m really excited about becoming the women’s athletic director with such a successful athletic program,” Riley said.
