WORLD IN BRIEF : VATICAN : Tests Find Changed Cells in Pope’s Tumor

The Vatican said that tests on a tumor removed from Pope John Paul II’s colon confirmed it was not cancerous, although some cells were starting to show signs of a possible malignancy. In releasing results from the operation five days ago on the 72-year-old pontiff, the Vatican said doctors found one small area of “proliferating cells that were losing their benign characteristics to take on those of a malign degeneration.” However, papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro was quick to add that “not one cancerous cell” was found by the Pope’s doctors.
