Padilla Leads, Wery in Second in Junior Golf

San Diego’s Jill Wery and Rancho Santa Fe’s Greg Padilla are in good position after the opening round Tuesday of the Nabisco Mission Hills Desert Junior golf tournament in Rancho Mirage.
In the girls’ 15-18 division, Wery is two strokes behind leader Emilee Klein of Studio City. Klein shot a 75 on the 5,754-yard, par-72 Mission Hills Country Club old course. Padilla leads the boys’ 13-14 division after he shot a 71 on the 6,314-yard course. He leads Andy Hastings of Spokane, Wash., by a stroke.
Michael Ruiz of San Diego is caught in a five-way tie for sixth in the boys’ 15-18 division. Venezuela’s Gilberto Morales shot a one-under par on the 6,894-yard course to grab the lead after one round.
