The environment remains a primary concern of Americans, even when environmentalism conflicts with economic growth, a survey found. Support for environmental causes declined, however, when respondents were asked whether taxes should be raised for more programs. Sixty-four percent of 1,200 adults interviewed by the Roper Organization Inc. for a Times Mirror Magazines National Environmental Forum Survey said environmental protection was more vital than economic gain.
