The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Sammy Sosa (broken hand) and pitcher Dave Smith (strained elbow) on the 15-day disabled list and called up infielder Doug Strange and pitcher Dennis Rasmussen from Iowa to take their spots. . . . The Detroit Tigers sent pitcher Scott Aldred to triple-A Toledo and filled his roster spot with outfielder Dan Gladden, off the disabled list.
