KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — A wind-driven fire scorched 600 acres and threatened rural neighborhoods near Klamath Falls, prompting the overnight evacuation of about 1,000 residents.
The fire Thursday came within 100 feet of several mobile homes southwest of Klamath Falls in southern Oregon, but no structures were damaged and no one was injured, said Doug Decker, spokesman for the Oregon Department of Forestry.
About 200 firefighters, aided by airplanes dropping fire retardant and helicopters equipped with huge water buckets, were able to halt the forward spread of the blaze.
