SIMI VALLEY : Children Clean Up Folk Art Landmark
- Share via
Armed with paintbrushes, garbage bags and brooms, nine elementary school students spent their Saturday cleaning up Bottle Village, the folk art landmark in Simi Valley.
The children, second- to fourth-graders, have learning disabilities and the cleanup project was part of a class they are taking at Mountain View Elementary School in Simi Valley.
“They are at another level artistically,” said April Volz, an instructional aide.
“It really blows me away, they see things differently. They are so awed by this place.”
The children collected garbage, painted doorways and swept areas of the historic Bottle Village museum, a collection of 13 buildings and sculptures constructed from thousands of used bottles and other discarded materials.
The museum has been closed to the public since 1982 because of unsafe conditions.
The children’s cleanup project is part of ongoing efforts by Simi Valley residents to help the museum prepare for reopening.
