SMALL FACES, LOLLAPALOOZA EDITION: “Lollapalooza” headliners the Red Hot Chili Peppers have hired a new guitarist to take over for John Fruscante, who abruptly quit during a Japanese tour last month--barely in time to be electronically airbrushed out of the band’s naked photo on the cover of the new Rolling Stone. The new Pepper is Arik Marshall, a relatively unknown, Hollywood-based musician. . . .

No word yet on whether members of Seattle bands Soundgarden and Pearl Jam will join up on “Lollapalooza” shows to do material from the “Temple of the Dog” album that members of both bands collaborated on last year as a memorial to deceased singer Andrew Wood. But A&M; Records is taking the opportunity to give “Temple of the Dog” a new push. . . .

The circus sideshow acts that will entertain on the alternative tour’s midways have made for a few interesting prop requisitions. Among the items promoters must provide for each show: 20 live crickets, 10 jumbo mealworms, 10 healthy night crawlers and a pound of maggots.
