H-P Unveils Replacements for Mainframes: Hewlett-Packard Co. introduced a powerful line of non-mainframe computers meant to replace costly room-size mainframes. H-P’s nine new refrigerator-size machines, ranging in price from $365,000 to $925,000, have as much speed and power as multimillion-dollar mainframes, the company said. Forty-six percent of mainframe owners said last year that they planned to switch to smaller but still mighty computers that can handle multiple tasks and lots of data, according to the research firm Dataquest Inc. of San Jose. International Business Machines Corp. controls up to 85% of the stagnant mainframe market, which amounts to $30 billion a year, analysts said.
