Lisa Magorien has resigned as Chaminade High girls’ basketball coach after three seasons, citing unspecified “outside” pressures.
Magorien’s assistant, Lauretta Claus, also has resigned. No replacements have been named.
Magorien, whose husband Doug coaches volleyball and soccer at Taft, led the Eagles to a 35-21 record the past two seasons. Chaminade reached the semifinals of the Southern Section Division IV-AA playoffs in the 1990-91 season and advanced to the quarterfinals this year.
The Eagles, who will have four starters back, finished fourth in the Mission League this past season.
“I enjoyed the players and there are a lot of kids I hate to leave,” Magorien said. “But pressures from outside make coaching not much of a pleasure. I have no desire to return.”
Magorien expects to remain at the school as a biology and physical education teacher.
Claus, a former member of the Australian Olympic team, expects to remain as an English teacher at the school.
John Najar, a former All-City baseball standout from San Fernando High, has been released from his scholarship at Fresno State.
The sophomore right-hander appeared in only one game this season, giving up a grand slam on his first pitch against California.
Two high school baseball teams from Mexico and another from Japan will compete in the sixth International Tournament of Friendship, scheduled to begin Saturday.
Oxnard High will play host to the tournament, which includes teams from Mexicali, Mexico, and Shizuoka, Japan. The tournament, which will run through Tuesday, includes teams from Dos Pueblos, Santa Barbara and Oxnard.
