COLLEGE BASEBALL : Christ College Irvine’s Power Sinks Pacific Lutheran

Christ College Irvine managed to play a baseball game on its water-logged field Wednesday, which was bad news for Pacific Lutheran.
Lonny Zimmerman had two home runs and Daryl Lowe had a grand slam as CCI pounded Pacific Lutheran, 19-3, in a nonconference game.
Lowe’s grand slam came in the second inning as Christ College Irvine (16-7) scored seven runs to take a 7-0 lead. The Eagles added nine more runs in the third to take 16-0 lead. Jim Vlcek also had a home run for Christ College Irvine.
In other nonconference games:
Cal State Northridge 10, Cal State Fullerton 4--Junior Phil Nevin hit his 14th home run for visiting Cal State Fullerton (20-8), which lost for the second time in three games. Fullerton starter Bill Fitzgerald (5-2) gave up five runs in one-third of an inning. It was the second time in his last three starts he has failed to get out of the first inning. Northridge led, 5-2 after an inning and got two more in the third to take a 7-3 lead.
Steven Morales (4-1) allowed seven hits and struck out eight to get the victory. Jim Betzsold hit his fourth home run for Fullerton.
UCLA 2, Chapman 1--Mel Huse had an RBI single in the ninth to break a 1-1 tie for visiting UCLA (18-8) at Hart Park in Orange. UCLA had also scored in the second. Chapman’s run came in the fourth inning on a home run by Larry Stahlhoefer, his seventh of the season.
