Beer Is Froggies’ Notion of Fun

Set back on a street crammed with auto repair shops and loading docks in a busy industrial part of Fullerton is a bar with a sincere, homey atmosphere and a claim to the county’s two-time electric dart champs.

Froggies Bar & Grill is known among North County locals as the comfy spot between the freight lines and train tracks. It’s a beer-and-wine bar and small restaurant offering refuge mainly to all-night truckers and students from nearby CSUF seeking hot plates of food, a few cheap beers and some good company.

Owners Ron and Terre Desjardins cater to this odd pairing. Bargain beers at $1.50 a bottle or $3.50 per pitcher for Budweiser, Coors and Miller--not to mention free popcorn--appeal to the student budget. (Other domestics and imports such as Rolling Rock, Corona, Heinken and Fosters go for $2.25 a bottle, still not a bad deal.) The truck drivers seem partial to the Froggie Burgers--topped with bacon and cheese and dressed with the works (mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles) and including a side of fries, all for $4.

If you’re partial to electric darts--a game similar to traditional darts but played on a board that lights up, makes noises for better tosses and tallies team points automatically--this is definitely the place to try your hand. But not on Thursdays--that’s when the corporate league takes over for about an hour of games.

There are daily happy-hour and lunch specials; menu items include a yummy grilled cheese with potato chips for $2 and a spicy bowl of chili and beans for $2.50.
