SAN DIEGO : Probe Finds Fire Intentionally Set
- Share via
A passer-by who spotted smoke gave firefighters a head start against a Wednesday morning fire that threatened a neighborhood gymnasium, San Diego Fire Department spokesman Rick Valdes said.
When fire units arrived at the park at the Memorial Park and Center recreation facility at 2902 Marcy Ave., they found the conference room next to the gymnasium on fire.
There were no injuries, but investigators found vandalism and say the fire was intentionally set about 5 a.m. Wednesday. According to Valdes, there has been a history of problems with gang members scrawling graffiti in the area.
The gymnasium, which usually has 60 youngsters on any given night, will be closed indefinitely. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
