HDTV Technology Demonstrated: General Instrument Corp. and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology staged the world’s first over-the-air demonstration of a TV system that transmits signals in the digital language of computers. The new technology--high-definition television or HDTV--was used to broadcast to a five-foot-wide video screen in the Capitol building in Washington. Chicago-based General Instrument and MIT are one of four groups proposing a design for an American version of HDTV, which offers sharper pictures and sound than conventional TV. The Federal Communications Commission is expected to decide which system to adopt in 1993.
