LOS ANGELES : Woman Gets 18 Months in Abuse of 7-Year-Old

A Los Angeles woman Monday received an 18-month jail term for abusing a 7-year-old boy who said he was beaten, forced to eat insects and sometimes fed only bread and water.
Los Angeles Municipal Court Judge Glennette Blackwell also ordered Claudia DuPont, 33, to stay away from the boy after being told that the defendant purportedly phoned the child at his foster home and threatened him.
DuPont was convicted Jan. 30 of one count each of misdemeanor child abuse and child cruelty. Blackwell’s sentence was the maximum allowable under law, said Deputy City Atty. Charles Aguado.
Jurors deliberated just two hours following a 10-day trial before finding her guilty, the prosecutor said. Police went to a Wilshire-area boarding home on Aug. 24, 1990, to investigate a landlord-tenant complaint. While they were there, a tenant told them about the abuse.
