Coffman Made Executive VP at Lockheed

In a move that reflects the growing importance of its space operations, Lockheed Corp. on Monday announced that Vance D. Coffman, president of Lockheed’s Space Systems Division, has been promoted to the newly created post of corporate executive vice president.
As executive vice president, Coffman will join Daniel M. Tellep, chairman and chief executive, and Vincent N. Marafino, vice chairman and chief financial and administrative officer, in developing Lockheed’s overall direction and management, the company said.
Industry analysts have said that Lockheed is trying to strengthen its strategy--and its business--in space-related operations because the company’s defense business is likely to diminish as Pentagon spending continues to decline.
Succeeding Coffman, 47, in his former post is Donald F. Tang, 58, Space Systems Division vice president and assistant general manager.
“It is clear that greater leadership depth will be required to fulfill our commitment to active, responsible citizenship and to provide the emphasis on strategic planning essential to Lockheed’s continued health and vitality in the new defense environment,” Tellep said.
