Two-time Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee came within .03 seconds of her American record for the 60-meter hurdles, even though she was overstriding because officials at the Mobil 1 Invitational indoor track meet in Fairfax, Va., had mistakenly placed the hurdles at the men’s height. Joyner-Kersee was timed in 7.84.

“To run like that with those hurdles where they were, that’s pretty good,” Joyner-Kersee said.

Meet officials later agreed to rerun the event with the hurdles at the proper setting, but Joyner-Kersee declined, saying she did not want to risk an injury in an Olympic year.

Algeria’s Nouredine Morceli won the mile but came up short in his world-record attempt. Morceli took the lead just past a half-mile and ran to the front. He won in 3:54.41, but a 60-second third quarter doomed any chance he had at Eamonn Coghlan’s mark of 3:49.78.

In other results, Andre Cason (6.54) defeated Leroy Burrell in the 60-meter dash for the second time in three days, and Tony Dees (7.53) won the 60-meter hurdles by out-leaning Greg Foster (7.54).
