From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The Department of Defense will cancel most of the $79.7 million it is owed by military personnel who were overpaid in Operation Desert Storm, the Pentagon announced. The debts accrued because the Pentagon mistakenly sent advance payments or overpayments to individuals who should not have received them. The recipients normally would be required to return the money. Letters explaining the settlement process will be sent to all affected people in January.
